In a world that monetizes hustle and makes rest feel like a character flaw,
this invitation is almost subversive. Jesus doesn't say "work harder and you'll earn peace."
He says come as you are — weary, burdened, depleted — and receive what you cannot manufacture.
The word Jesus uses — "rest for your souls" — is deeper than sleep.
It points to a settled-ness, a belonging, an end to striving.
The kind of rest that doesn't require a vacation or a sabbatical.
The kind available right now, right here, to whoever asks.
Today's practice: Set down one thing you've been carrying that isn't yours to carry.
"They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over." — Matthew 14:20
Five loaves. Two fish. Five thousand people. And twelve baskets left over.
Whatever you make of the mechanics of this miracle, its message is clear:
scarcity is not the final word. In the economy of God, what is freely given
tends to multiply. The disciples wanted to send the crowd away —
to make their insufficiency someone else's problem.
Jesus said: give what you have.
For those of us navigating real scarcity — real hunger, real lack —
this story doesn't promise magical provision.
But it does insist that community, sharing, and trust can transform
what looks like not-enough into abundance.
Consider: What small thing do you have that you could freely offer today?
"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." — Psalm 23:4
The Twenty-Third Psalm does not promise the valley away.
It says through. You will walk through it. The darkness is real.
The valley is real. The shepherd does not appear ahead of the valley
and wave you around it; the shepherd is beside you in the valley.
This matters enormously for honest faith.
There is a kind of religion that promises immunity from hardship,
and it collapses the moment hardship comes.
The Psalms offer something sturdier: presence in the middle of it.

The Bible is a library, not a book. It contains 66 books written by dozens of authors across a thousand years in three languages. Understanding this helps when a Psalm reads differently than an Epistle — because they're different kinds of literature.

Where to begin: The Gospel of Mark is the shortest and most immediate. The Gospel of John is the most poetic. The Psalms speak to every emotion. Philippians is the most joyful letter ever written from a prison cell.
A simple practice: Read a small passage. Ask: What is happening? Who is speaking? What do I feel reading this? Start there.

Jesus raises the stakes: not just don't murder, but don't harbor hatred. What does it mean to exceed the minimum?

All three are done "in secret." What does that mean for how we practice faith publicly vs. privately?

"You cannot serve God and money." "Do not worry about tomorrow." What does this actually look like in an inflationary economy?
